Learn to Swim at The Sea with Dreamers Open Water Swim Coach

The Pool is Practice. The Sea is the Main Event.

Great pool swimming is a fantastic start, but the open water is a completely different world. It requires a unique set of skills, a different mindset, and an expert coach who has been there hundreds of time before.

Our Philosophy: Taught by Those Who Race & Train In Open Water

Our approach to open water coaching is born from hundreds of hours spent training and competing in the sea. We know the feeling of a chaotic race start, the challenge of navigating in choppy water, and the mental fortitude required to swim without the comfort of lane lines or walls. We don't just teach from a textbook; we coach from deep, personal experience. Our mission is to pass on this real-world knowledge, transforming you from a capable pool swimmer into a confident and strategic open water athlete.

The Difference: A Pool Coach vs. An Open Water Specialist

Not every coach who is brilliant in the pool knows how to teach in the open water. They are two fundamentally different sports. One is about technique in a controlled environment; the other is about mastering an unpredictable one.

It takes years of first-hand experience to understand the nuances of currents, sighting, and race-day chaos. Here at Dreamer Swim Academy, our open water coaches are not just pool swimmers—they are seasoned triathletes and open water racers who bring that invaluable, hard-won experience to every single lesson.

Your Open Water Questions, Answered

Do I Need to Be a Very Fast Swimmer?

Not at all. Our open water program is not about speed; it's about building confidence, safety, and endurance. We welcome swimmers of all paces. Our primary goal is to make you feel comfortable and capable in the open water environment, whether you're training for a race or simply want to enjoy a sea swim.

What Specific Gear Do I Need for My First Lesson?

For your first session, you will need a comfortable swimsuit and a good pair of tinted or polarized goggles to help with sun glare. We also highly recommend a brightly coloured swim cap and a personal safety buoy—these are essential for visibility in the open water.

Is It Safe to Swim in the Open Water in Singapore?

Yes, it is very safe when done with the right knowledge and supervision. Your safety is our absolute priority, and we achieve this through meticulous planning.

For beginner open water swimmers, we highly recommend and conduct our initial sessions at Sentosa. The beaches there are exceptionally safe, protected by safety nets and situated in U-shaped coves that prevent strong currents from dragging swimmers out. It is the perfect, calm environment to build your initial confidence.

All our sessions, whether at Sentosa or other locations for more advanced swimmers, are planned according to the latest weather and tide conditions, and you are under the constant, vigilant supervision of your expert coach.

What Are the Recommended Gears for Open Water Swimming?

Having the right gear is essential for both safety and performance in the open water. Here are our non-negotiable recommendations:

  • A Brightly-Coloured Swim Cap: This is a must-have for safety. We recommend bright, "shiny" colours like neon yellow, orange, or pink. Avoid blue or black caps, as they blend in with the water. The primary purpose of the cap is to make you highly visible to boats, other swimmers, and your coach.
  • Open Water Goggles: Unlike pool goggles, these are specifically designed with a wider lens for better peripheral vision. Look for a pair that is tinted or polarized to protect your eyes from sun glare while still allowing you to see sighting objects like buoys clearly.
  • A Proper Swimsuit: For swimming in Singapore's climate, a standard, comfortable swimming trunk or one-piece suit is perfectly suitable.
  • Safety Buoy (Highly Recommended): For added visibility and security, we highly recommend using a personal tow-float or safety buoy, especially during training.
