From Frustration to Innovation: Why We Custom-Make Our Swim Gear

Why We Custom-Make Our Swim Gear | Dreamers Swim School Singapore

If you walk into a sports store, you’ll see walls lined with swimming gear. Big brands, flashy packaging, and a dizzying array of choices. It begs the question: as a swim academy, why did we decide to go through the immense effort of sourcing, customizing, and manufacturing our own line of Dreamers equipment?

The answer is born from the pool deck.

After years of teaching thousands of children and adults, we started to notice a pattern. We saw expensive goggles that leaked within minutes. We saw hard, heavy fins causing injuries in group classes. We saw toddlers screaming because their "junior" swim cap was squeezing their head like a vice.

We realized that most gear on the market is designed for competitors, not learners. It is built for speed and hydrodynamics, often sacrificing comfort and practical utility. So, we decided to fix it. We used our background as athletes and our daily experience as coaches to reverse-engineer the perfect toolkit for learning to swim in Singapore.

Here is the story behind the three essential items in our kit bag.

1. The Goggle Project: Beating the Singapore Sun

In Singapore, swimming is an outdoor activity. Our students are in the pool at 10 AM, 2 PM, or 4 PM—times when the tropical sun is blazing.

The Problem: Most entry-level goggles come with clear or blue-tinted lenses. While great for indoor pools, they are terrible for outdoor lessons. We watched students squinting, their eyes watering from the glare, unable to focus on the coach because the sun was blinding them.

The Dreamers Solution: We went to the same factories that produce for top-tier brands, but we changed the specs.

  • Mirrored Coating as Standard: We mandated a mirrored coating on our learner goggles. This acts like sunglasses for the water, reflecting harsh sunlight and reducing glare. It allows a child to open their eyes comfortably underwater and above water, keeping them relaxed and focused.

  • The Smooth-Glide Strap: We selected a high-grade, smooth silicone strap that slides over hair without pulling. It allows for a painless application, preserving the happy vibe of the lesson.
  • The "EU-Approved" Safety Standard: This is a detail most people miss, but it keeps us up at night. The skin around a child’s eyes is incredibly delicate. While Singapore doesn't have a specific rule for this, we insisted that our lenses and seals be made from EU-Approved materials. This ensures they are non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and safe for long-term contact with young skin. We prioritized safety over cost because we treat your child's eyes like our own.

2. The Fin Philosophy: Safety & Technique Over Speed

Fins are the most misunderstood tool in swimming. Parents often buy the hardest, longest fins they can find because they want their child to go fast.

The Problem:

  • The Safety Risk: In a group class of 4-year-olds, hard plastic fins are dangerous. A wayward kick can bruise another child or scratch the coach.

  • The Technique Trap: A rigid, full-foot fin allows a child to use a "bicycle kick" (bending the knees) and still move forward because the fin catches so much water. It masks bad technique.

The Dreamers Solution: The "Jelly" Soft Fin We found a specific design but customized the material compound to be significantly softer and lighter.

  • Safety First: They feel almost like jelly. If a child accidentally kicks a friend, the fin absorbs the impact. It is lightweight, preventing strain on developing ankles.

  • The "Learn it Right" Strap: We specifically chose an open-heel design with a single strap. This is a deliberate technical choice. If a child performs a "baby kick" (flexing the foot), the strap will slip off. To keep the fin on, they must point their toes and kick from the hip. It is a self-correcting tool. We aren't using the swimming fin to make them fast; we are using it to force them to learn the correct motor pattern. Learn it once, learn it right.

3. The "No-Headache" Cap: A Progressive Approach

The swim cap is the nemesis of many toddlers. It pulls hair, it feels hot, and it’s tight.

The Problem: Competitive caps are designed to be thick and incredibly tight to smooth out the head shape and reduce drag by milliseconds. For a 3-year-old beginner, "reducing drag" is irrelevant. Comfort is everything. A tight cap creates sensory overload and can cause headaches, making the child dread the lesson before they even get wet.

The Dreamers Solution: The 65g "Comfort" Mold We threw out the competitive specs and customized a specific 65g silicone mold.

  • Purposely "Loose": We designed these to be thinner, stretchier, and slightly bigger than standard junior caps. They are easy to put on (no hair pulling!) and sit gently on the head.

  • Progressive Overloading: By making the cap comfortable, we remove the battle. The child is willing to wear it. Over time, they get used to the feeling of something on their head. They benefit from the warmth and the feeling of water flowing over their ears without the pain. Once they are older and competitive, they can switch to a tight cap. But for learning? Comfort wins every time.

Our Promise: Crafted with Thought

We didn't source these products to become a retail giant. We sourced them because we wanted our students to have the best possible chance of success. Every item in our shop has a reason for existing. It has been tested, tweaked, and approved by us, for you.

It might have taken us a while to get the specs perfect, but we promise that these gears are crafted with thoughts coming from years of teaching. They are the tools we wish we had when we started.
